Well I seem to recall federal troops being sent into Utah against the Mormons. Funny how we could send them in to stop them, but not send them in to help them...

Sam, Buchanan could send federal troops to Utah in 1857 because it was a territory, not a state. This was not lost on Brigham Young and the Mormons, who then pushed hard for statehood but found little support until polygamy was renounced and the Mormons agreed to play politics according to party rules.
